Techniques used for Touradero

Monday, December 29th, 2008

For Touradero, my second Ruby on Rails baby I used the following techniques:

plugins/libraries:

  • attachment_fu
    for uploading and handling images
  • geokit
    for geolocating the Venues
  • YM4R
greatest plugin for doing all the GoogleMaps stuff
  • prototip
Javascript library for easy rendering of complex tooltips
  • Redcloth
to allow Users to rich-format their content
  • calendardateselect
a great datepicker with rails integration
  • a sligthly tweaked version of John Resig’s prettyDate snippet
to display several timestamps in the format “3 weeks ago”

techniques:

  • partial caching
… I heavely used partial caching to keep this baby fast
  • MySql full text search
after trying around with ferret I decided to use “MySql full text search”. For me it is the best choice, even though I had to learn some things about it.

The whole system is running on a busy 256 MB VPS using mod_rails and Ruby Enterprise Edition. … and for that low server profile I am quite happy about the speed.

The Pope on your mobile phone

Hallelujah!

Walking trough the streets of my town I came across this poster.

“Jesus Christ!”, I said to myself. The Catholic church just has landed in 21st century.

By the way, I just thought that once before as I heard that the Vatikan departed the “Limbo of Infants” just some months before. Ok, I have to admit, never heard of that crap before.

But that left some questions open. Questions, that I wanted to solve by sending to SMS to Papa: +43-664-606651 [Huh, a lot of 6 in there, but in the name of Satan they didn't dare to put 666 in].

Questions like: … SMS, 21st century, just say Church 2.0, but what about …

  • the right of abortion
  • the right of birh control
  • homosexual relationships
  • etc. etc.

But unnfortunately that is not the plan of this service. Rather than getting in discussion with Ratzi one can use these extraodinary services: download ….

  • quotes by the Pope
  • recorded bells
  • prayers

… no questions asked.

A friend of mine is actually doing his Architecture studies in Vilnius. Taking a conclusion of his last reports it is nice and easy living (besides living together with irish party guerillas).

But from time to time you have some other problems to solve
